County's Growing 65+ Population Produces Unique Challenges
By 2011, Lafayette County's population is projected to grow to 33,557 residents. The portion of the population projected to make up individuals 65 and older is 17.24% of the overall population-higher than both the State (14.67%) and national (13.64%) levels.

As evidenced by the chart, by 2011, projections show a significant decline in individuals 44 and younger, while the population shows huge projected increases in individuals ages 45 and over. In general, the population over the age of 65 will increase in most sections of the county.
Area % Growth 2011 % Growth 18-44F 2011 % Growth 45-64 2011 % Growth 65+
Lafayette County 0.93% -2.50% 5.05% 9.19%
State of MO 3.18% -1.96% 9.27% 11.41%
USA 4.82% -0.79% 11.58% 13.50%

While the projected overall rate of increase in the 65+ population is not as great as in the state or the United States in 2011, it is important to note that the current percentage of the population that is 65+ is 15.4% in Lafayette County, compared to 12.4% in Missouri and the U. S. Additionally, during the period 2000 - 2005, the percentage change of those 65+ increased 5.2% in Lafayette County, compared to 3.8% in Missouri and 3.9% in the U.S. Consequently, Lafayette County's increase in older adults occurred earlier, and continues to be higher as a percentage of overall population when compared to Missouri and the U. S. This will present unique challenges for the County.

The Health Care Coalition of Lafayette County is working diligently to help adults 55 years of age and older receive a comprehensive suite of resources to help them age mentally and physically with dignity.
